Remarkably both were awarded the DSM and details of Stanley's medal listing are in the National Archives, Kew. D.O.B 01 March 1918 ref number BT 395/1/94339, discharge number R.204069

Footnote from Stanley Sutherland's son: "I should point out that my father's DSM is unique as my dad and his half brother Jimmy who were on the same ship (SS Parracombe) running the blockade into Malta during the 2nd world war were the first British merchant seaman to be awarded a distinguished service medal as it was normally only awarded to the military"
